The Course Aim
The aim of this course is to provide key training which enables dental nurses to competently undertake impressions across a wide range of applications including:
Upon course completion students will be able to safely take dental impressions under the supervision of the dentist. In addition they'll be able to demonstrate an in depth knowledge of the materials used in the impression taking process; and demonstrate the use of, and requirement for dental impressions through set assignments. The course is open to all GDC registered dental nurses who are currently employed within a dental practice. They must also have access to adults and children who require impressions; and have agreed support from a qualified dental professional.
So what does the course cover?
This impression taking certification covers areas pertaining to impressions and impression taking. These include topics such as:
Dental model making
Infection control and cross-contamination prevention
Examining the use of dental materials used in impression taking
Understanding the cases and reasons why dental impressions are taken
Impression taking on both study models and real patients
Understanding how to prepare the mouth for an impression
How to select and prepare the correct impression tray
Fault finding on an impression tray and how to correct it
How to mix materials and load the impression tray
Safe decontamination and storage of trays
Dealing with medical emergencies
Health and safety
The course is split between classroom and practice environment and while the theoretical classroom sessions are delivered over several short sessions, students have between 4 -6 months to complete their practical experience portfolio. In order to achieve this, students must take an agreed amount of impressions from a mix of child patients, adult patients, and study models, all of which must be supervised and signed off by their supporting dentist/mentor.
What might students expect in the future?
It's possible that with this qualification, a dental nurse who is able to take impressions will be more in demand. Often this means working in the private sector where they can command more money. However even if this isn't the case, dental nurses can expect a greater variety in their working day with more focus on patient-centred tasks.
