Summary

National Certificate in Orthodontic Nursing is a post registration qualification recognised by the General Dental Council and is suitable for any GDC registered nurse who regularly carries out orthodontic treatments. Candidates would ideally have 1 years of experience in orthodontics. It is strongly recommended as well as a requirement to those wanting to embark on Orthodontic therapy.

 

Entry requirements

To be eligible for the course you must:

  • Hold a recognised Dental Nursing Qualification
  • Be registered with the General Dental Council
  • Have support of your employer to support you in completion of the Record of Experience
  • Commit to 100% attendance on the given course dates
  • Be able to meet the clinical requirements for the record of experience

It is the candidate’s responsibility to ensure they have access to the clinical requirements of the record of experience, they will not be provided on the course.

Course syllabus

The syllabus includes 12 topics as follows:

  • Anatomical structures Relative to Orthodontics Classification of Malocclusion
  • Orthodontic Treatment
  • Orthodontic Records
  • Orthodontic Appliances
  • Cross infection control in Orthodontics
  • Interdisciplinary Care
  • Laboratory Skills
  • Oral Health in Relation to the Care and management of Appliances Orthodontic Stock Control
  • Medico-Legal
  • Orthodontic Indices and Clinical Governance

Award 

In order to achieve the award you will have to successfully complete:

  • Written paper
  • Record of Experience

 

Record of Experience

This is designed to provide a record of activities completed to facilitate specific learning experiences.

Part A - Complete Logs sheet for 50 patients - at least 10 cases of fixed appliances and 10 cases of removable appliances including 5 cases of functional appliances

 

Part B - Complete 2 case studies of approximately 2000 words

  • Advice to one patient requiring advice on maintenance of oral health and care of their orthodontic appliance
  • One patient undergoing orthodontic treatment requiring an interdisciplinary approach.

 

Part C - Complete evidence of Competence :

  1. Clinical photography
  2. Cephalometric tracing, digitisation and measurement
  3. Taking and handling impressions
  4. Casting of models
  5. Fitting and adjustment of Appliances

Record of Experience will need to be complete and submitted to the NEBDN approximately 4 weeks prior to the examination. Date to be confirmed.

 

Course dates - TBC

The course will run over 10 full days 10:00am - 4:00pm.

 

The 10 days include all the theoretical instruction and practical guidance needed to fulfil the NEBDN syllabus.

 

CPD

Upon 100% attendance - candidates would receive 60 hrs of verifiable CPD.

Lasts 1 hr and 30 minutes held in enters in London or Lancashire.

Part A - Consists of 25 multiple choice questions

 

Part B - 3 written essay style/structured questions
